About the initiative
The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. The UN Day, celebrated annually on 24 October, commemorates the historic moment in 1945 when the UN Charter entered into force, officially establishing the United Nations. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories—including the five permanent members of the Security Council—the UN was born as a global platform for peace, cooperation, and human rights.
As the world prepares to celebrate this milestone, UN Mongolia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, is launching a series of commemorative events and activities to reflect on eight decades of global achievements, and to inspire renewed commitment to strengthening the UN for future generations. This communications and commemorative campaign will also highlight the impactful collaboration between the UN and Mongolia for the country’s prosperity over the past 64 years, as well as our shared future for sustainable and inclusive development.
Mongolia joined the United Nations on October 27, 1961, as its 101st member. Since then, the UN has become Mongolia’s trusted partner in its path to development and prosperity. Joining the UN gave Mongolia a voice in global multilateralism and opened the door to decades of cooperation in peace, development, and diplomacy.
This campaign, called the UN Week, will be a week-long celebration in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia.
Let’s celebrate together the United Nations’ 80th Birthday
Call to our esteemed partners and supporters
The “UN’s 80th Birthday” Campaign invites partners and friends in Mongolia to show solidarity through symbolic gestures that reflect support for the UN’s values. UN Mongolia encourages all partners to promote peace, sustainable development, and human rights, and to visually express support for the UN’s mission and its 60+ year partnership with Mongolia.
Proposed commemorative events:
1. Congratulatory Messages and Social Media Campaigns:
Partners are invited to share congratulatory messages, reflections, and creative expressions of appreciation through their digital platforms and media channels. Highlight the impact of your collaboration with the UN, the support received, and the positive outcomes achieved through our shared efforts over the past decades.
2. Ulaanbaatar Turns UN Blue – Illumination of the buildings, monuments, bridges and statues with blue
Partners are encouraged to join the #UlaanbaatarTurnsBlue campaign - a symbolic celebration by illuminating office buildings, iconic towers, statues, and monuments in blue on UN Day – October 24. Partners may choose to simply illuminate their buildings in blue or enhance the gesture by incorporating the UN80 logo in digital displays. Public spaces in Ulaanbaatar—such as monuments, bridges, and statues—can also be lit up in blue to visually express solidarity with the UN and its values.
3. Organize a special event to celebrate the UN80 anniversary
Other suggested activities include hosting commemorative ceremonies, showcasing joint initiatives, engaging youth through creative contests, launching digital campaigns, and organizing talks and dialogue on UN Day (24 October).
